Do we really realize the impact we have on the soil we walk on every day, the air we breathe in and on the planet, we call home? Throughout the climate strikes that started last year and grew day by day, as a group of friends we asked ourselves what we can do. We all knew that art would carry our thoughts and feelings further than words could. This is how “1°C warmer” was born, which is a work about the centuries-long destruction we as humans have caused to “Mother Nature”.

We would first like to thank our mothers, who lovingly accepted to become our models and everyone else, who helped us throughout this project. The eight painted issues that were then photographed are closely related to climate change and a result of the anthropogenic impact of the past 200 years on our planet of 4,6 billion years, which is therefore now 1°C warmer.
Melting Glaciers

750 billion tons of ice is melting every year due to global warming.
If all land ice melted, sea level would rise approximately 70 meters worldwide.
Mass Production

Almost 60 kg of hazardous waste is generated a year for every single person in the world.
The hazardous waste thrown out this year so far is around 150 million tons.
Seventh Continent

The average person eats 70,000 microplastics each year.
Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations.
Drought

An estimated 55 million people globally are affected by droughts every year.
Water scarcity impacts 40% of the world’s population.
Animal Poaching

Around 30,000 species are driven to extinction every year.
On average, poachers kill 96 African elephants every day.
Air Pollution

Nine out of ten people breathe polluted air.
Air pollution kills 7 million people every year.
Wildfires

90% of all wildfires are started by humans.
Over the past 10 years, there were an average of 67,000 wildfires annually and an average of 7.0 million acres burned annually.
Light Pollution

Light pollution kills millions of birds each year.
Artificial light at night disrupts the seasonal cycle of trees.
Happy Mothers Day to “Mother Nature” and all the mothers across the globe!
